hi, i saw your message on the PN bulletin
board. i was diagnosed in August of 1998 with inherited
cerebellar ataxia with associated severe peripheral neuropathy.
my neurologist says it is impossible to determine the source of
the gene that is responsible for my ataxia since it is recessive
and could go back in my family for years and years.
so far i am the only one i know of who has this neurological
disorder. the ataxia causes loss of balance and coordination and
with my feet and toes being numb, i feel very insecure when i am
walking. when i am on my feet a lot such as during the recent
holidays cooking and baking and preparing for guests i really
suffer. thank God i have a good husband who helps me a lot.
now the PN seems to be spreading to my hands. the pointer finger
on my right hand is the worst. now i can hardly write, peel
potatoes or other veggies or turn a key. the finger aches and
burns just like my toes.
i have had surgery several times on my feet through the years
because of hammertoes and serious callouses on the bottom of both
feet. my doctor says the PN has been coming on for at least 20
years and no surgery would ever fix my feet. my deformed feet are
due to the un-diagnosed ataxia and now the PN.
also, i have recently been diagnosed with diabetes type 2, which
only complicates matters. i am a mess but try very hard to keep a
good outlook. somes days are very hard.
