12 Apr 1999 - book no. 4790
* * - While Other People Sleep
by Muller, Marcia (read by Dunne, Bernadette)
Private detective Sharon McCone runs a successful firm that's caught the public eye. A sick chick starts impersonating McCone, potentially ruining her reputation. McCone, in this book, seemed stupid, & the writing was campy at times.

01 Mar 1999 - book no. 4640
* * * - - Eye of the Storm
by Muller, Marcia (read by Dunne, Bernadette)
Sharon McCone, private detective, is invited by her kid sister to an island where troubled souls, legends, storms, murder, and conspiracies abound. This book kept my interest much better than Dead Man's Island, which shares a similar plot.

15 Aug 1998 - book no. 3934
* * * * - In the Presence of the Enemy
by George, Elizabeth (read by Peters, Donada)
A fine crime mystery, written with great attention to plausibility, details, & character development. A kidnapper sets out to take vengance on British tabloid editor Dennis Luxford, but - in the end - needlessly destroys other lives too.

22 Apr 1998 - book no. 4557
* - - Dead Man's Island
by Hart, Carolyn (read by Reading, Kate)
Pretty annoying, like a bad soap opera replete with bad actors reading bad lines. Yuk.

11 Feb 1998 - book no. 4298
* * * - Fuzz
by McBain, Ed (read by Marosz, Jonathan)
Sometimes humorous.

01 Aug 1997 - book no. 4260
* * * - Freaky Deaky
by Leonard, Elmore (read by Adams, Alexander)
"Radicals, left over from the sixties, go on a bombing spree for revenge and profit, but their plan goes awry." Like all of Leonard's books, the personalities are engaging and make the story.

* * * * - Touch
by Leonard, Elmore (read by Adams, Alexander)
"Bill Hill, a flashy promoter, aims to exploit the spiritual gifts of Charlie Lawson, once a brother in a Catholic order, now a Detroit hospice caregiver." Nifty range of personalities, from simple believers to manipulative connivers.

* * * - - Out of Sight

* * * - Split Images
by Leonard, Elmore (read by Adams, Alexander)
"Robby Daniels, playboy millionaire, has a contradictory reputation: he makes money, but unmakes people, supposedly shooting them in self-defence." An interesting walk through the fantasy world of those who have it all.

11 Sep 1996 - book no. 4050
(not rated) - Hiding Place
by Wilcox, Collin (read by McKeever, Larry)
"Mrs. Towers thought her daughter June was a good girl. Why then, did the pretty teen turn up dead atop a rubbish heap in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park?" Her death, another murder, and some obvious suspects make for a complex mystery.

* * * - - Act of Betrayal

Britt Montero, Miami crime reporter, has man problems, a deceitful mother, and a crime boss mentor through an unknown heritage (her deceased father was a Cuban freedom fighter). It all blends together, thanks to a big hurricane.

* * * - - Maximum Bob
by Leonard, Elmore (read by Adams, Alexander)

09 Jul 1996 - book no. 3864
* * * - - After Dark
by Margolin, Phillip (read by Russotto, Michael)
Lawyer mystery, nicely done. Tracy Cavanaugh, a green attorney, becomes an unwilling witness to various clues behind murders of an Oregon Supreme Court Justice and a colleague. Lawyer's lawyer, Matthew Reynolds, helps 'solve' the mystery.

02 Jul 1996 - book no. 4010
* * * - - Stick
by Leonard, Elmore (read by Adams, Alexander)
Well-told story about a good-at-heart, countrified criminal trying to reform, but who is set up by the mobsters. He works his way out of it, though - 'cause he's meaner and smarter than he looks.

21 Jun 1996 - book no. 4046
* * * - - Single Shot, A
by Jones, Matthew F. (read by Choate, Richard)
Uncomfortably weird, but recommended. Not your typical formula fiction - it's a little deep inside the mind. Our country-boy hero, John Moon, has an unfortunate accident while poaching, & everything about his life turns to shit.

21 Jun 1996 - book no. 1258
* * * - Maltese Falcon, The
by Hammett, Dashiell (read by Prichard, Michael)

13 Sep 1995 - book no. 3630
* * * - - Carcass Trade
by Ayres, Noreen (read by Peiffer, Mary)
"Smokey Brandon goes undercover in a biker's bar to investigate her sister-in-law's gruesome death. It nearly does Smokey in!" This was a pretty decent read.

29 Aug 1995 - book no. 3636
* * * * * - In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead
by Burke, James Lee (read by Kramer, Michael)
A Dave Robicheaux, coon-ass detective novel that is moist, mysterious, deep-south swampland fiction at its best. I love the way Burke writes: you can smell the foul odors of evil from one mishap to the next, treading with dank Dave.

26 Jul 1995 - book no. 3598
* * * * * - Alienist, The
by Carr, Caleb (read by Marosz, Jonathan)
1896. New York City. Crime reporter summoned by his former classmate, Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a psychologist or 'alienist'. They form a pioneering crime-solving team to stop a killer. This is excellent historical fiction and setting.
