* * * * - - Cities of the Plain
by McCarthy, Cormac (read by Adams, Alexander)
A fine portrayal of friendship, Mexican philosphy, life on the ranch, & proudly independent cowboy spirit. Young cowboy John Grady Cole, pragmatist & master diviner of animal & human instincts, commits himself to a love that's doomed for tragedy.

20 Mar 1999 - book no. 4642
* * * * * - Cold Mountain
by Frazier, Charles (read by Frazier, Charles)
A long walk through a Smoky Mountain wilderness that brings cruelty, beauty, humanity, nature, nobility & coarse reality. Inman & Ada face the starving, darkest days of the Civil War in the South. Meet the friendly Home Guard.

* * - Good Earth, The
by Buck, Pearl S. (read by Prichard, Roses)
A parable story of the lucky, sometimes unlucky life of Chinese peasant Wang Lung and his dysfunctional family. His strongest faith was in 'the land' to get him through life's hardships. There are no noble characters here, only many problems.

10 Jul 1998 - book no. 4604
* - - Pandora
by Rice, Anne (read by Reading, Kate)
Mostly tedious - a necessary 'evil', I suppose, when chronicling the family tree of vampires. Roman nobles, Pandora and Marcayus, preserve & protect the dark gift that is brought to them from the ages of Egyptian pharaohs.

* * * * - Lunatics
by Denton, Bradley (read by Prichard, Michael)

30 Apr 1998 - book no. 4628
* * * - - Cuba Libre
by Leonard, Elmore (read by Adams, Alexander)
Very entertaining; one of E. Leonard's better ones. But I'm a sucker for historical novels. The time is the eve of the Spanish-American War; the place is Cuba.

05 Nov 1997 - book no. 4441
* * * * - - Out of Body
by Baum, Thomas (read by Prichard, Michael)
"Denton Hake has just been paroled from prison for a rape he has no memory of committing." Denton experiences memory lapses, during which he seems to travel outside of his body, and he's rarely sure if he's the bad guy or not.

22 Sep 1997 - book no. 4338
* * * * - - Nobody's Baby But Mine
by Phillips, Susan Elizabeth (read by Fields, Anna)
Incongruous personalities make this book funny & entertaining. Jane Darlington, physics nerd, decides to have a baby that won't be as nerdy as she was. She seduces a football player, presumed to be not-too-bright. Big surprise, though.

11 Aug 1997 - book no. 4384
* * * * - Last Six Million Seconds, The
by Burdett, John (read by Langton, Stuart)
The setting is the eve (last 6,000,000 seconds) of transition of power for Hong Kong, from British to Chinese. Hard-working cop gets mixed up in the conniving world of high officials whose driving engine is vast amounts of drug money.

* * * - - Zeke and Ned
by McMurty, Larry and Ossana, Diana (read by Whitener, Barrett)
A strange tale by American Indians who try to live according to Whitey's rules, but, tragically, their ideals and philosophies inevitably lead to disaster and condemnation. Told with an interesting, simplistic narrative style.

* * * * - Angle of Repose

* * * * - Robert Crews

"Robert Crews plays Robinson Crusoe when his buddies die in a plane crash. He's all alone, except for 'Friday', a sweetheart on the run." This was a very interesting read on survival & the mind.

07 Oct 1994 - book no. 3529
