- Honor's Voice: The Transformation of Abraham Lincoln
- by Wilson, Douglas L. (read by Whitener, Barrett)
Identifies turning points in Lincoln's adolescent & early career days that were formative in making him a skillful & resolute politician. It was an amazing transformation: from a boy working a river flatboat to a self-taught lawyer & community leader.- 10 Mar 1999 - book no. 4698-AB

- Jackie Robinson: A Biography
- by Rampersad, Arnold (read by Prichard, Michael)
Jackie, unafraid to speak his mind, did much to prod America into recognizing blacks as legitimate & valuable citizens. The timing & shrewdness of Branch Rickey, Brooklyn Dodgers, who started integration of pro sports, cannot be overstated.- 24 Feb 1998 - book no. 4506

- Einstein Lived Here
- by Pais, Abraham (read by Reese, Jonathan)
A fine book. Einstein was impressively accurate in predicting the catastrophes forthcoming (and sounding the alarm) when Hitler came to power, while the rest of the world was slow to believe and react to the evil unfolding.- 29 Aug 1997 - book no. 4378

- Reporter's Life, A
- by Cronkite, Walter (read by Whitener, Barrett)
Walter Cronkite's autobiography is an excellent insight into modern history; he reported much of it. He worries, though, today's 'human interest' news is more biased, rooted in entertainment, and doesn't cover the important issues.- 26 May 1997 - book no. 4222

- Making of a Country Lawyer, The
- by Spence, Gerry (read by Marosz, Jonathan)
"Forthright memoir follows Spencer from Wyoming childhood, through law school...," his first years as a county prosecutor, and on to legal accomplishments & mid-life crises aplenty. If Spence wasn't a lawyer, I'd give the book 5 stars.- 04 Dec 1996 - book no. 4122-AB

- Private Life of Chariman Mao, The
- by Zhisui, Li, Dr. (read by Howard, Geoffrey)
Dr. Li, Mao's personal physician for almost all of Mao's reign (that he lived to tell this is miraculous), reveals how Chinese leaders' treachery & whims killed millions. Corrupting total power made everyone's life a living nightmare.- 29 Nov 1994 - book no. 3421-AB

- Kissinger
- by Isaacson, Walter (read by Reese, Jonathan)
His huge ego and intensely competitive intellect helped shape modern history, through complex 'linkage' strategies. Like him or not, "K" led us into the late stages of the Cold War, made it difficult for the Soviets to gain the upper hand.- 25 Oct 1993 - book no. 3290-AB

- Picasso
- by O'Brian, Patrick (read by Brown, Richard)
A thorough biography of Picasso. I am amazed at the productivity and longevity of this great artist, and the number of modes, media, and artistic experiments he pursued. Not bad with the women, too.- 31 Aug 1993 - book no. 3155

- Father Son & Co.: My Life at IBM and Beyond
- by Watson, Thomas J., Jr. and Petre, Peter (read by Reese, Jonathan)
I really liked this book. It's filled with candor and real-life stories (from Tom Watson's childhood up) of the generation (father & son) who made IBM a corporate super power - the 'Think' generation who led us into the computer age.- 12 Jul 1993 - book no. 3117

A good description of the personalities of Russian Tsar Nicholas II and his family, the horrors they endured as they were taken down a long path of exile and concealment, culminating in execution with a shameful burial.
